Half life

  • The amount of time it takes for half the concentration of a drug to be eliminated
  • Denoted by T1/2
  • Alpha half life: Redistribution half life
    • The decrease in therapeutic effect from a drug bolus is primarily due to redistribution time
  • Beta half life: Elimination half life
    • Amount of time for 50% of the concentration of a drug to be eliminated or transformed
    • Very important for infusions, when the compartments and tissue where the drug is redistributed to are saturated
